In 1908, U.S. Patent 887,357 for a wireless phone was issued in to Nathan B. Stubblefield of Murray, Kentucky. He applied this patent to “cave radio” telephones and not without delay to cellular telephony as the term is at present accepted. Cells for mobile phone base stations were invented in 1947 by Bell Laboratories engineers at AT&T and further developed by Bell Labs during the 1960s. Radiophones have a long and sundry history going back to Reginald Fessenden’s invention and shore-to-ship demonstration of radio telephony, thru the second World War with army use of radio telephony links and civil services in the 1950s, while hand-held cellular radio devices have been available since 1973. A patent for the 1st wireless phone as we know today was issued in US Patent Number 3,449,750 to George Sweigert of Euclid, Ohio on June 10, 1969.

Martin Cooper, a Motorola researcher and executive is widely thought to be the inventor of the first practical mobile phone for hand-held use in a non-vehicle setting. Cooper is the inventor named on “Radio phone system” filed on October seventeen, 1973 with the US Patent Office and later issued as US Patent 3,906,166. Employing a modern, if rather heavy cartable handset, Cooper made the 1st call on a hand-held mobile phone on April 3, 1973 to a rival, Dr. Joel S. Engel of Bell Labs.

In 1983, Motorola DynaTAC was the 1st licensed mobile phone by FCC in the US. In 1984, Bell Laboratories developed modern commercial cellular technology ( based, to a big extent, on the Gladden, Parelman Patent), which employed multiple, centrally controlled base stations ( cell sites ), each providing service to a small area ( a cell ). The cell sites would be set up such that cells partially overlapped. In a cellular system, a signal between a base station (cell site) and a terminal ( telephone ) only need be strong enough to reach between the two, so the same channel can be used simultaneously for separate conversations in different cells.

Until the early 1990s, following arrival of the Motorola MicroTAC, most mobile telephones were too massive to be carried in a jacket pocket, so they were generally installed in automobiles as vehicle telephones. With the miniaturization of digital elements and the development of more sophisticated batteries, mobile phones have become smaller and lighter.

-Please select the High Quality option- In February of 2009, New Jersey Transit and 3 Atlantic City Casino/Resorts began operating the ACES Train (Atlantic City Express Service). We saw the train being tested in January of this year. (See video link below). With a few weeks of planning and lots of camera preparation, this trip turned out to be excellent. Starting off at NJT’s Hamilton Station, we’ll skip ahead to Newark Penn Station. At Newark, we’ll board Westbound ACES Train 7171. With some great train races, along with two crossings of the Delaware River — the ride to Philadelphia is action-packed. But the ride gets even better upon switching onto the Atlantic City Line. With an unbelievable amount of grade crossings, the K5LA horn on our train is busy the whole way through. However, there were a lot of passengers on the trip to Atlantic City. The less-crowded return trip to New York yielded MUCH better K5LA audio! So come along with us on a journey from Hamilton to Newark to Atlantic City… and return! With ex-Amtrak P40’s, ex-Conrail / CNJ GP40’s and much, much more… this is one Trainiac Production you won’t want to miss! Take A Look: There are millions of railroad videos on the internet… but here is a channel that you’ll want to keep an eye on for new uploads… YouTube user Trainutjob is an amazing Delaware Valley railfan video producer. With shots from the CSX Trenton Line, Amtrak Northeast Corridor, Norfolk Southern Morrisville Line and more — you’ll be …

Help answer the question about Civil Service

Where can I find a copy of the Chinese civil service exam?
We're discussing the classic Chinese civil service exam now in Chinese history class, and we're wondering whether anyone knows of an existing copy of the test. It could be online or by text (in which case, we'll order it).

Thanks!
